B is for BE SEEN -- white or bright colors on Halloween will help you be easily seen!

C is for Costume -- wear shoes that don't make you shuffle or slip, and a costume that won't cause you to trip!

Learn all of the Halloween ABCs!

Learn some safety rules if you are planning on going trick-or-treating, door-to-door, take a few moments to play the Halloween Safety Game

Need a Costume? Dress up like an Oak Harbor Firefighter for Halloween! Here are some tips for making your own firefighter costume:

  • Find an old jacket. A barn jacket or an old raincoat would work very well. Sometimes firefighters wear black pants and coats and sometimes they wear yellow.
  • Wear a pair of sweatpants and some red suspenders if you have them.
  • Add reflective tape bands to the coat around the arms, wrists, and waist; and to the pants around the ankles. You need reflective tape for the same reason firefighter's need it: so you will be more visible in the dark.
  • Wear your rubber boots (any type of boot will do).
  • Wear gloves on your hands. Firefighters wear them to protect their hands, yours will keep you warm!
  • Pick up an inexpensive firefighter helmet at a party supply or toy store -- firefighters wear red, black, yellow, orange or white hats. The hat color determines the firefighters position, rank or job. Write your name and your favorite number on the front of your hat, "FF Smith #801" the FF stands for Firefighter.
  • If you're going to be a firefighter, you'll need a badge. Come into Station 81 for a junior firefighter badge sticker. Or, you can print this badge picture and make your own.
  • Carry an old cell phone or a small black box (it will look like your pager)... communication is important! Firefighters carry a pager so they know when there is a fire and a radio so they can communicate with other firefighters.
  • Build your own self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) tank out of a empty 2-liter soda bottle, some tubing and a swim mask, attach it to your backpack. Firefighters wear an SCBA when they enter smoke-filled buildings so they will have clean air to breath.
  • Make a fire extinguisher -- paint a spray bottle red if you want a "functioning" extinguisher or make a pretend one from a 2-liter soda bottle.
  • Take your Dalmatian dog (or a toy dog) along with you.
  • Some other props: a short length of garden hose, a toy ax or toy shovel, a first aid kit, a length of rope, and, MOST IMPORTANTLY...a flashlight. Just like a firefighter, you will need it to see in the dark.
  • For your trick-or-treat bag, use a white gift bag and paint a red cross on each side.
