Happy Independence Day! Independence Day (commonly know as the 4th of July) is a fun holiday. It is a celebration of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Many celebrate with an outdoor festival, family barbeque, baseball games, carnivals and most of all FIREWORKS! While fireworks have been restricted or banned in many Washington counties, they are still allowed in Oak Harbor. Visit the WA State Patrol website for some fun learning activities for kids and their caregivers.

Do you know what a firefighter looks like in an emergency situation?

It is important to know what firefighters looks like when they are wearing protective fire gear. Knowing what to expect when a firefighter is there to help you will help you be less afraid.

Photo of firefighters in full bunker gear during a practice drill

A firefighter wears a helmet to protect his or her head. The helmets have a shield that protect his face and fire-resistant fabric covers his hair, ears and neck. He wears a mask over his face that provides clean breathing air when he enters a smoky building.

He wears a coat and pants made from three layers of protective fabrics to protect him from flames and heat. It is bulky and can make him look extra large. His hands are protected by heavy gloves and he wears thick boots on his feet.

When firefighters have to be around very hazardous materials they wear special suits that make them look a little like space aliens. The suits protect them from dangerous chemicals. In this photo, the firefighter is being de-contaminated, or washed, so she can remove her suit safely.

When a firefighter is working in a non-dangerous situation he will be wearing his "station uniform". Black pants, black shirt (or gray t-shirt) and maybe a department ball cap.
